The ignition system in a watercraft is not a single part but a coordinated electrical network with one primary objective: to produce a high-voltage spark at exactly the right moment inside the combustion chamber. That spark ignites the air-fuel mixture, and the resulting expansion of gases pushes the piston, turning the crankshaft, and ultimately spinning the impeller. When the system works well, you press the start button and the engine fires almost instantly, idles smoothly, and revs freely. When it does not, you are left on the trailer, or worse, stranded in open water with an engine that cranks but refuses to start. This chapter is about understanding those components, how they interact, and why a solid grasp of the system is the foundation for every repair and decision you will make as a professional or a serious owner.

Unlike a car, a personal watercraft engine is typically a two-stroke or a high-performance four-stroke that operates at high RPM for extended periods, often in a saltwater environment. This creates specific demands on the ignition system. Heat, vibration, and corrosion are the enemies. A stator mounted on the engine case is exposed to oil and heat. A CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) unit sits in a sealed box but still sees significant thermal load. Wiring harnesses run through tight spaces where they can chafe.
