What Water Softener Salt Actually Is
Water softener salt is not a single product. It is a category of sodium chloride compounds manufactured and packaged specifically for use in ion-exchange water softeners. The salt itself is identical to food-grade salt at the molecular level: it is sodium chloride (NaCl). What separates water softener salt from table salt is its physical form, its purity relative to the needs of a resin bed, and the absence or presence of additives. Manufacturers produce it in several physical configurations, most commonly as pellets, crystals, and blocks, and each form is designed to behave a specific way inside a brine tank.
To understand why the physical form matters, you have to understand what happens inside a softener. A residential or commercial softener contains a bed of ion-exchange resin beads, usually made of polystyrene with sulfonate groups attached. These beads are saturated with sodium ions before they are put into service. When hard water passes through this resin bed, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water are attracted to the resin more strongly than sodium. They displace the sodium ions, which are released into the water, and the calcium and magnesium are bound to the resin. This is a continuous exchange process, and its capacity is finite. Once the resin has given up most of its sodium and is loaded with calcium and magnesium, it is exhausted, and it must be regenerated. That regeneration is where water softener salt
