A water heater vent is a duct system that removes the byproducts of combustion—primarily carbon dioxide and water vapor—from inside a building to outdoors. For gas and propane water heaters, the vent is as critical to safe operation as the gas line feeding it. Yet many installers and homeowners treat venting as an afterthought: a simple pipe run from the top of the water heater to the roof. This misunderstanding causes the majority of preventable water heater failures, warranty voids, code violations, and safety hazards in residential and light commercial installations.
The core function is simple in principle: hot combustion gases rise naturally (or are pushed mechanically) through a duct and exit the building.
