Water and flood detectors are built on a simple principle: detect the presence of water where it shouldn't be, and alert the property owner or building manager before damage spreads. In practice, this means a device—usually battery-powered and about the size of a smoke alarm, or a thin cable—senses moisture in a basement corner, under a water heater, in a crawl space, or inside an HVAC drain pan, and triggers an alarm (audible, silent, or remote notification). The alert buys time: minutes to hours to locate the leak, shut off water, clear standing water, or call a plumber before drywall rots, electrical systems short, or mold colonizes the building.
This matters because water damage is one of the most common and expensive catastrophes in residential and commercial property. A single failed water heater, a pipe burst in freezing weather, a backed-up sump pump, or a slow roof leak can cost tens of thousands of dollars in repair, replacement, and remediation. Many of these failures are silent—water seeps into a wall cavity or basement corner for weeks or months before anyone notices buckling paint or soft flooring.
