Understanding Water Filters
A water filter is a device designed to remove unwanted substances from water by forcing it through a barrier or reactive medium. The barrier traps particles, or the medium reacts with dissolved contaminants, or both. That simple definition covers everything from a mesh screen that stops sand to a membrane that removes 99.99 percent of bacteria, to granular carbon that adsorbs chlorine and odors. But the practical reality is more specific: what a filter removes depends entirely on its design, and what it removes is not the same as what it is claimed to remove. Understanding this distinction is the foundation of competent filter selection and maintenance.
Water contains three categories of contamination: particles suspended in the water (sediment, sand, rust flakes, algae), dissolved substances (salts, minerals, chlorine, fluoride), and microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, protozoa). A single filter cannot remove all three equally well. A sediment filter catches particles but does nothing about dissolved minerals. Activated carbon removes chlorine and improves taste but does not soften water or remove bacteria reliably. This is why water treatment professionals often use filters in series—each filter handles what it is actually good at, and the next filter handles what the first one missed or did not address.
