How the Cooling System Works
Most water coolers use a closed-loop refrigeration cycle, similar to a household refrigerator or air conditioner. The system contains a sealed circuit of refrigerant—a liquid that boils at very low temperatures. Here's the basic sequence: refrigerant circulates through a compressor, which pressurizes it, heating it in the process. The hot, pressurized refrigerant then flows through a condenser, a coil of tubing that sits inside the cooler's cabinet, usually near the back. Air passes over the condenser coils, and the refrigerant cools down, condenses back into liquid, and releases its heat into the room. The cooled liquid refrigerant then flows through an expansion valve, which drops the pressure and causes it to expand and evaporate.
