Chapter 1: Understanding Washers
A washer is a thin, typically ring-shaped fastener component with a hole in the center. It sits under the head of a bolt or under the nut in a bolted assembly. This simple description masks a more important truth: washers are load-distribution and surface-protection components engineered to solve specific problems that arise when fasteners are tightened into or through softer materials, composite assemblies, or surfaces that cannot safely support the concentrated pressure of a fastener head or nut alone.
In practice, when you tighten a bolt through wood, plastic, aluminum sheet metal, or even soft steel, the fastener head or nut can dig into or crush the surface material under clamping load. The area of contact between the fastener head and the substrate is small—perhaps a quarter-inch across. The clamping force from a single bolt can easily reach 5,000 to 50,000 pounds or more depending on the bolt diameter and preload, concentrating that force into a tiny footprint. The material underneath simply cannot withstand that pressure and begins to crush, dimple, or fail. Once the surface is damaged, the fastener can no longer maintain proper clamping force as the joint settles and the bolt backs off.
