Chapter 1: Understanding Wall Paneling
Walk through a modern building and you are unlikely to notice the wall paneling. That veneered plywood in a bank lobby, the stamped metal sheeting in a freight elevator, the fiberglass-reinforced plastic in a commercial kitchen. Most people see these surfaces as they would see paint: a flat finish on top of a wall. But paneling is not a coat of paint. It is a building material with a specific internal structure, engineered to meet performance requirements that paint simply cannot address.
Indeed, the thing that distinguishes wall paneling from a layer of plaster or paint is its thickness and its core. A true wall panel is manufactured in a rigid sheet or plank form and installed mechanically or adhered to a supporting substrate. The standard 4-by-8-foot sheet used for walls is a factory-made product. It is composed of layers, and each layer provides a specific function. The substrate, usually plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), or a mineral-based core, gives the panel its dimensional stability and impact resistance. Over that core sits a face material, the part you see and touch. It can be a wood veneer, a plastic laminate, a printed paper film, or a sheet of metal. There is also a backing material, which prevents warping and serves as a balancing layer to the face.
Because of this built-in physical structure, paneling is often the correct choice when you need a hard, washable, or easily replaceable surface with design flexibility. Painted drywall dents easily,
