Chapter 1: Understanding VoIP Gateways & Routers
A VoIP gateway is a device that translates voice traffic between incompatible network protocols. In the most common scenario, it sits between an analog phone line (or a legacy digital telephone system) and an IP network, allowing calls to flow between the two worlds. The gateway converts analog audio into data packets that can travel across the internet, and converts incoming IP packets back into audio that a traditional phone can understand. Without this translation layer, a modern VoIP phone system and a legacy analog PBX would have no way to communicate with each other.
The reason this device exists at all is historical. Telephone infrastructure did not evolve from analog to digital to IP in a single, coordinated migration. Instead, organizations replaced equipment piecemeal, over decades, and the result is that most mid-size and large organizations today still operate hybrid networks: some phones and systems remain on analog or proprietary digital infrastructure, while others run on modern VoIP. A manufacturing facility might have analog extensions wired through the building from a 20-year-old PBX, but the headquarters expects all calls to route through a SIP trunk provider. A doctor's office might have invested in a modern cloud phone system but still relies on fax machines connected to traditional landlines.
