A viola is a bowed string instrument that occupies a specific acoustic and physical space between the violin and cello. It is pitched lower than the violin—a standard viola sounds about seven semitones lower than a standard violin—and higher than the cello. Where the violin typically plays in bright, soaring registers and the cello handles deep, resonant lines, the viola inhabits the alto and tenor range, with a warmth and depth the violin cannot produce and an agility the cello trades away.
