Chapter 1: Understanding Video

Video is a system for capturing motion and color over time, encoding that information into a digital or analog signal, storing or transmitting it, and then reconstructing it on a display. That abstract definition is accurate but useless. What matters is understanding how each piece works, where trade-offs happen, and why the decisions you make at capture affect what you can do with the footage later.

How Video Actually Works

Start with capture. A camera lens focuses light onto a sensor—a grid of millions of light-sensitive cells. Each cell measures the brightness and color of the light hitting it at a specific moment. That measurement is converted into a number—typically a value from 0 to 255 for standard video, representing the intensity of red, green, and blue light at that pixel. Thirty times per second (or 60, or 24, depending on the frame rate), the camera reads every pixel, collects all those numbers, and packages them into a frame—a single still image representing one moment.

The rate at which frames are captured and displayed is the frame rate, measured in frames per second or fps. A frame rate of 24 fps means 24 still images per second. When those images are played back in sequence at the same speed, the human visual system perceives continuous motion—a phenomenon called persistence of vision. The brain doesn't see discrete frames; it sees flowing action. The frame rate affects both how motion looks and, practically, how much data you capture.
