This handbook treats "vehicles" the way a working professional treats them: as capital equipment that must perform a defined function, within a budget, over a predictable service life. Before we get to type-specific buying guidance, maintenance schedules, or business planning, we need a common foundation on what a vehicle actually is, how its systems interact, and why the decisions you make about those systems have outsized consequences years down the road. That is the task of this first chapter.

When you say "vehicle," you are covering a huge physical range: a 50cc scooter that weighs 110 pounds, a Class 8 semi-truck that is rated for 80,000 pounds of gross weight, a snow-belt work pickup, a farm utility vehicle, and a 25-foot recreational camper. The engineering that goes into them is wildly different, but the logic of how you evaluate them is remarkably consistent. A vehicle is a platform for converting stored energy into mechanical motion, and almost every other aspect of it is a consequence of that conversion. The engine or motor converts fuel or electricity into rotational force. The drivetrain transmits that force to the wheels. The suspension keeps the wheels on the ground. The braking system converts motion back into heat. The body defines what you can carry. The electronics decide when and how all of it works together.
