When you start a vehicle and shift into gear, the transmission immediately begins relying on its fluid to work. That fluid is not sitting passively in the pan. It is being circulated at high pressure, absorbing heat, lubricating hundreds of moving parts, creating the hydraulic pressure that causes gears to engage and disengage, and transmitting mechanical power from the engine through the transmission to the wheels. The Four Core Functions of Transmission Fluid

Cooling. A transmission generates significant heat during operation. The engine's cooling system does not cool the transmission. That responsibility falls entirely to the transmission fluid.
