Vehicle safety equipment serves a single, measurable purpose: to reduce the severity of injury or the likelihood of death in a crash or critical driving scenario. It is not about preventing crashes—that is the job of braking systems, tire grip, steering response, and driver attention. Safety equipment activates after a crash has begun or during a moment of acute risk, and it works by absorbing energy, restraining occupants, or providing information to reduce impact forces or improve escape options.
To understand how safety equipment works, you first need to understand what happens in a crash at the level of physics and human physiology. When a vehicle moving at 35 miles per hour strikes a fixed object head-on, the vehicle structure decelerates sharply—often in under 200 milliseconds. The occupants inside, however, continue moving forward at 35 miles per hour due to inertia. Without restraint, an occupant will travel forward through the vehicle interior, striking the steering wheel, dashboard, windshield frame, or seat ahead. The impact velocity between the occupant and the interior is what causes injury. A person's unrestrained collision with a steering wheel at 35 mph generates forces that can fracture ribs, rupture organs, and cause severe head and neck trauma. The brain itself, suspended in fluid inside the skull, accelerates and decelerates rapidly, tearing neural tissue and causing concussion or permanent damage.
