A vehicle remote keyless system is a radio-frequency communication system that allows a driver to lock, unlock, and sometimes open the trunk or activate other vehicle functions from a distance, typically 20 to 60 feet away, using a handheld transmitter (fob) that sends an encrypted signal to a receiver module mounted on or integrated into the vehicle. It is not a single component but rather an integrated chain of hardware, firmware, and electrical connections that work together to interpret a signal from outside the vehicle and translate it into specific mechanical or electrical actions inside the vehicle.

In practical terms, when you press the lock button on your keyless fob, a sequence of events occurs: the fob generates a radio signal on a frequency typically between 300 megahertz and 433 megahertz (depending on regional regulations and the specific system); that signal travels through the air and is received by an antenna mounted on the vehicle's roof, door handle, or inside the vehicle body; a receiver module—often integrated into the body control module (BCM) or installed as a stand-alone receiver—detects and decodes that signal; the receiver verifies that the signal is valid, comes from an authorized fob, and is not a replay of a previous command; and if all checks pass, the receiver sends an instruction to the door lock motors or solenoids to lock or unlock the doors. The entire sequence takes place in milliseconds.
