A jumper cable is a pair of insulated wires, each terminated with a clamp, designed to complete an electrical circuit between the battery of a disabled vehicle and the battery of a working vehicle so that the working vehicle's battery can supply current to the disabled vehicle's starter motor, allowing it to crank and start.

That functional definition is accurate but incomplete. In professional practice, jumper cables are far more than a simple pair of wires. They are a critical safety and reliability component that connects two 12-volt (or 24-volt in larger vehicles) electrical systems. The specifications of those cables—their gauge, length, insulation material, clamp design, and operating temperature range—directly affect whether a jump-start succeeds, whether it damages the disabled vehicle's electronics, whether it creates a fire or shock hazard, and how long the cables will remain functional in storage and use.

Consider a practical scenario. On a cold morning in January, a fleet technician attempts to jump-start a vehicle with undersized cables—say, 4-gauge instead of the recommended 2-gauge—in a parking lot where ambient temperature is 15°F. The cables may physically fit the battery terminals and the jumper vehicle's battery. Current will begin to flow. But undersized cables have higher resistance to current flow.
