What a Door Lock Knob Actually Is

A vehicle door lock knob is the manual interface you use to lock or unlock a car door from the inside. In its most common form, it is a small cylindrical post protruding from the top of the door panel, near the window sill. When you push it down, the lock mechanism engages; when you pull it up, the lock disengages. While the concept sounds simple, a lock knob is a precision component that interacts with a series of rods, levers, and linkages to operate the latch mechanism that fastens the door to the body of the vehicle. When it works correctly, you never think about it. When it fails, the door becomes inoperable, creating a security breach, a safety hazard, or a frustrating inconvenience.

To understand the knob's role, you must understand the system it's a part of. The lock cylinder on the outside of the door accepts your key. When you turn that key, it rotates a cam that moves a rod. That rod connects to the lock actuator—in older cars, a simple mechanical mechanism; in modern cars, an electric motor. The actuator moves the lock linkage, which controls the latching mechanism.
