Brake fluid is a hydraulic medium—a specially formulated liquid engineered to transmit mechanical force through a sealed system in response to pressure. When you press your brake pedal, you are not directly pushing a mechanical linkage to the wheels. Instead, you are creating hydraulic pressure inside a closed system filled with brake fluid. That pressure travels through steel lines and flexible hoses to wheel cylinders or calipers, where it pushes pistons outward against brake pads or shoes, which then clamp against the rotor or drum. Without the right fluid in the right condition, this chain of force transmission breaks down, and your brakes fail.
The reason brake fluid deserves its own handbook—and the reason so many mechanics and hobbyists get it wrong—is that brake fluid is not a generic liquid. It is a precision product defined by exact chemical composition, boiling point, viscosity, compressibility, and moisture absorption limits. A can of DOT 3 fluid is not interchangeable with DOT 5.1. Fluid that has absorbed moisture over two years of service is not the same as fresh fluid. Contaminated fluid sitting in a wheel cylinder for a decade is not fit for a new brake system. Understanding what brake fluid actually is requires looking at three things: its chemical nature, its role in force transmission, and the properties that make it suitable or unsuitable for specific applications and conditions.
