In practice, it is infrastructure—a solution to a specific problem: how to move one or more bicycles from one location to another using a vehicle not designed to carry them inside. The rack bridges the gap between bike and vehicle, translating the bike's geometry and weight into forces that the vehicle can safely bear without damage to either.

At its core, a vehicle bicycle rack works by transferring the weight and motion of the bike(s) to a mounting platform that is mechanically secured to the vehicle. The specific platform—a hitch receiver, roof rails, or trunk panel—determines how forces flow, what weights can be supported, how visible and accessible the bikes remain, and what trade-offs the owner must accept.
