Vehicle antifreeze is not a luxury fluid or a marketing afterthought. It is a critical system chemical that prevents your engine from destroying itself through freezing, boiling, corrosion, and chemical breakdown. When chosen correctly and maintained properly, antifreeze extends engine life by thousands of hours. When neglected or mismatched, it causes cooling system failure, internal corrosion, head gasket breaches, and repairs that cost thousands of dollars.
This chapter explains what antifreeze is, how it works inside your cooling system, and why the decisions you make about it matter more than most vehicle owners and even some technicians realize.
The Core Function: More Than Just Freezing
The name "antifreeze" is misleading. Yes, antifreeze prevents water in the cooling system from freezing in winter, which matters in cold climates. But freezing protection is only one of five critical functions. Antifreeze in your cooling system simultaneously prevents:
- Freezing: Water expands as it freezes. If plain water freezes inside your engine block, cylinder heads, or radiator, it will crack the casting. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water freezes at approximately -34°F (-37°C), depending on the type.
- Boiling: Pure water boils at 212°F (100°C) at sea level. Under the pressure of a sealed cooling system (typically 15 psi), the boil point rises, but a water-only coolant can still boil and cause steam pockets, loss of cooling capacity, and local overheating. Antifreeze raises the boil-over protection point to 265-275°F (129-135°C) or higher, giving your engine a margin of safety.
