At its core, an air freshener operates by one of two mechanisms: masking odors through stronger fragrance presence, or neutralizing odors through chemical reaction. Most products sold rely on masking—they introduce a more pleasant smell that overwrites perception of the underlying odor—while a smaller category works by adsorption (capturing odor molecules on a material surface) or neutralization (chemically converting odor molecules into neutral compounds).
