A VCR is a machine that records and plays back video and audio signals using magnetic tape as the storage medium. What a VCR Actually Does

A VCR converts electrical video and audio signals into magnetic patterns recorded on plastic tape coated with iron oxide particles. When you play the tape back, a read head detects those magnetic patterns and converts them back into electrical signals that your monitor or television can display and your speakers can reproduce. This is fundamentally different from digital video storage, which encodes information as binary data (sequences of ones and zeros). A VCR stores analog waveforms—the actual shape of the signal over time—directly as magnetic variations on the tape surface.

The practical consequence: a VCR recording degrades gradually as the tape is played, as dust and debris wear the magnetic coating, and as the iron oxide particles themselves lose their magnetic properties over time. A digital file either works or doesn't—there's no in-between. An analog tape signal can become noisy, distorted, or color-shifted without becoming entirely unreadable.
