The Core Measurement: Irradiance
A UV light meter is, at its most basic, a device that measures the amount of ultraviolet radiation arriving at its sensor. The fundamental quantity it reports is irradiance, which is the power of the radiation hitting a given area, usually expressed in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). Think of it as the intensity of the "photon rain" landing on a surface. This is a measure of power at an instant in time, not a measure of total energy. It tells you how fast something is being exposed, but not how much total exposure has occurred.
To understand total exposure, you need a different value: dose. Dose is the product of irradiance and time, and it is typically expressed in millijoules per square centimeter (mJ/cm²). For most practical applications, from curing adhesives to disinfecting water, the dose is the value that matters. A UV curing lamp might emit high irradiance, but if a part passes through the beam too quickly, it receives a low dose and the adhesive will not fully set. Conversely, a low-irradiance lamp can be used for a longer exposure time to achieve the same dose. A meter that only shows the current irradiance reading forces you to watch it closely and time the exposure yourself. More advanced meters integrate the measurement over time and display the accumulated dose directly, which is a critical feature for many industrial processes.
