Chapter 1: Understanding Urinals

A urinal is a plumbing fixture designed specifically for urine collection and disposal, engineered to operate independently of the toilet in a facility's waste system. Unlike a toilet, which handles both waste streams and requires the user to sit, a urinal is mounted at standing height (typically 19 to 22 inches from floor to rim for men's models), uses considerably less water per use, and occupies significantly less floor space. This distinction matters because urinals operate under a different set of mechanical, regulatory, and economic assumptions than toilets, and professionals who specify, install, or maintain them need to understand those differences concretely.

The core reason urinals exist is water conservation and fixture density. A standard toilet uses 1.6 gallons per flush in modern installations, and is used for both urination and defecation. In a high-traffic male facility—a factory, office building, stadium, or airport—a single urinal uses 0.5 to 1.0 gallons per flush and handles only urination, which statistically accounts for the majority of restroom visits in male facilities. Over the course of a year, a facility with heavy restroom traffic can reduce total water consumption by 20 to 50 percent by replacing some or all toilet fixtures with appropriately sized urinals. That savings translates directly to lower water and sewer bills, lower energy cost for heating water, and reduced treatment burden at municipal waste facilities. For a large facility—a 500-person office building, a manufacturing plant, a sports venue—the savings compound into five or six figures annually.
