A typewriter is a mechanical writing instrument that converts key presses into typed characters on paper using a system of physical levers, springs, and impact. When you press a key, a mechanical chain of events transfers that action to a typebar—a metal arm with a single character cast or struck onto its end—which swings upward against a ribbon and paper, leaving an ink impression. The paper advances one character space after each keystroke (the escapement mechanism), and when you reach the end of a line, you manually return the carriage to the start.
This is fundamentally different from a keyboard. A keyboard is an input device; a typewriter is a complete writing system. It requires no electricity (in mechanical models), produces permanent output without intermediate storage, and its operation is transparent: you see and hear the mechanism respond to your action.
