To understand what a TV replacement lamp is, you must understand what it does in the optical engine of a projection TV. The classic DLP (Digital Light Processing) television relies on a high-intensity discharge (HID) lamp, housed in a sealed module, to generate the light that eventually becomes the picture. This lamp is not a simple lightbulb. It is a hermetically sealed glass tube containing a gas mixture, typically mercury vapor, along with a tungsten anode and cathode. An electrical arc is struck between the two electrodes, raising the temperature inside the arc tube to over 1,000 degrees Celsius.
