A trombone is an acoustic brass instrument whose fundamental design has remained essentially unchanged for five centuries: a cylindrical brass tube bent into a roughly U-shaped profile, with a flared bell at one end and a mouthpiece receiver at the other. The player produces sound by vibrating their lips against the mouthpiece while a slide mechanism (or in some models, valves) alters the length of the vibrating air column inside the tube. The longer the air column, the lower the pitch; the shorter it is, the higher the pitch. This simple principle—mechanical length change producing pitch change—is the foundation of everything a trombone does.
What makes this straightforward idea work in practice is a specific combination of dimensions, materials, and mechanics that have been refined over centuries of use. A professional tenor trombone, the most common concert and jazz instrument, typically has a cylindrical bore of 0.547 inches (about 13.9 millimeters), a bell flare that expands gradually from that bore diameter to an exit bell diameter of 8 to 8.5 inches, and a total tube length of about 8 feet 6 inches in first position (when the slide is fully retracted). The slide itself consists of an inner and outer tube that nest together, allowing the air column to extend or compress as the player moves the slide outward (lengthening pitch) or inward (shortening and raising pitch).
