What Trees Actually Are
A tree is a perennial woody plant, typically with a single main stem (the trunk) and a structured canopy of branches, that lives for decades or centuries. But that botanical definition obscures what matters in practice: a tree is a long-term living asset that requires specific conditions to establish, performs measurable functions (shade, screening, windbreak, structure), generates ongoing maintenance costs, and can fail in expensive ways if poorly specified or installed.
In built environments—residential properties, commercial landscapes, urban streets, parks—trees are fundamentally different from other plants or infrastructure. A shrub lives 10 to 20 years; a mature tree lives 50 to 200 years. A deck fails visibly and can be replaced in weeks; a tree fails slowly over years and, once lost, cannot be replaced on a meaningful timeline. A specification error on a building material costs money; a specification error on a tree (wrong species, wrong site) costs money and looks wrong for decades.
Understanding trees means understanding them as systems that interact with their environment. A tree is not simply planted in the ground the way a post is set in concrete. A tree must establish a root system in the soil, develop relationships with soil microorganisms (especially mycorrhizal fungi), access water and nutrients through that system, manage seasonal growth and dormancy, respond to pests and disease pressure, and adapt to the specific microclimate of its site.
