A trash compactor is a machine that reduces the volume of solid waste by applying downward force—usually through a hydraulic ram or electric motor—until the material is compressed into a dense block. That block occupies roughly one-quarter to one-tenth the original space, depending on the waste type and the compactor's force rating. The machine then holds that compressed waste in a collection bin until the bin is full, at which point the bin is removed and replaced. That is the entire system: compress, contain, remove.
