The Electromechanical System
A toy train set is not a single object; it is a miniature electromechanical system consisting of several interdependent components. The train itself - the locomotive and the cars it pulls - is only the visible portion of the system. The track serves as both a physical guideway and a conductive path for electrical power. The power supply, often a simple transformer or DC power pack, provides the electricity that drives the motor. The control system, whether a simple variable resistor or a digital command station, allows the operator to regulate the speed and direction of the train. Understanding that these components are part of a single, integrated system is the first step toward effective ownership, repair, or sales.
In the classic analog system, the principle of operation is straightforward. Track is laid in an oval or more complex configuration. The rails are made of conductive metal - usually nickel-silver or steel. The power supply outputs a low voltage Direct Current (DC) to the rails. One rail is the "positive" rail and the other is the "negative" rail. The locomotive's wheels pick up this current, and the motor inside drives the gears. The speed is controlled by varying the voltage: more voltage, faster speed. The direction is controlled by swapping the polarity (which rail is positive and which is negative).
