Toothpaste appears simple: a tube of white or colored gel you squeeze onto a brush and use to clean your teeth. In practice, it is a carefully engineered suspension containing dozens of individual components that perform distinct chemical and physical functions. Understanding what toothpaste actually is—not what advertising claims it does—is essential for anyone who needs to choose it systematically, troubleshoot problems, advise others, or build a business around oral care products.

At its core, toothpaste is a heterogeneous suspension: a stable mixture of solid particles (abrasives, thickeners, therapeutic agents) suspended in a liquid or semi-liquid base (usually water, glycerin, and humectants) held together by binders and stabilizers. The word "heterogeneous" matters. Unlike a homogeneous solution—where all components are dissolved and invisible—a suspension contains distinct particles that remain visible and separate from the carrier liquid. This distinction is not academic. It explains why toothpaste can separate or settle in the tube, why its consistency changes with temperature, why it must be formulated with anti-caking agents, and why simply reading the ingredient list does not tell you how the product will perform on a tooth surface.
