A toothbrush replacement head is a discrete assembly of bristles, a plastic base, and a locking mechanism, engineered to be mounted on a reusable handle. In practice, it is the contact interface between the user's hand and the oral cavity. The handle provides leverage and grip, but the head performs the mechanical work of plaque disruption, biofilm removal, and gum stimulation. The first thing to understand is that a replacement head is not simply a smaller toothbrush. It is a precision part operating under specific mechanical and biological constraints. The handle typically weighs between 15 and 25 grams. The head weighs between 2 and 4 grams. That mass difference matters. When the user applies 200 to 400 grams of lateral force, the head's geometry determines how that force is distributed across the tooth surface. The Anatomy of a Replacement Head
Every replacement head consists of four functional zones: the bristle field, the neck, the collar, and the locking mechanism. The bristle field is the working surface, usually a rectangular or diamond-shaped arrangement of tufts. Each tuft is a cluster of filaments, typically nylon or a nylon copolymer. The number of tufts ranges from 30 to 60, depending on
