Chapter 1: Understanding Tool Sheaths
A tool sheath is a hold-open container designed to retain a specific tool on a person's body or on a piece of equipment while allowing deliberate and immediate extraction. It is not a storage box, a case, or a bag. A box holds a tool in a fixed location; a case protects a tool when it is idle; a bag carries multiple tools loosely. A functional sheath holds a tool in relation to the user's body or work position, keeps it accessible, and allows repeated insertion and removal without adjustment or attention by the wearer. This distinction matters because it drives the entire design, material, and fit decisions. When a worker only stores a tool at the end of a shift, the demands on the tool holder are minimal. When a worker must put a hammer or a lineman's pliers back onto a rig fifty times a day, the demands are structural.
The most common tool sheaths are designed for hand tools with a single working end that can be inserted into a rigid or semi-rigid pocket. A carpenter's hammer, a lineman's pliers, a file, a chisel, and a folding knife represent the classic categories. The tool slips into a shaped pocket until the handle or an integrated bolster meets the sheath mouth. The tightness of this fit is the primary retention mechanism for most sheaths, supplemented for softer materials by friction from the tool's own surface and for some knife sheaths by a strap
