Chapter 1: Understanding Tool Keys

A tool key is a mechanical component that transmits rotational force between two parts—typically between a motor shaft and a driven component such as a pulley, gear, sprocket, or impeller. It sits in recessed slots (called keyways) cut into both the shaft and the hub or bore of the component being driven. When the shaft rotates, the key prevents the hub from slipping and ensures they move as a single unit.

That simple description masks the reason this handbook exists: getting the wrong key, installing it incorrectly, or failing to maintain it is expensive. Equipment fails. Production stops. Repair costs spike. Safety incidents happen. Yet most people choose tool keys by asking what the supplier has in stock or by copying what was there before, without understanding what they're actually selecting or why it matters.

How a Tool Key Works

The mechanics are straightforward but worth understanding. A key sits in a keyway—a rectangular groove milled into both the shaft and the hub. The key's top surface contacts the top of the hub's keyway, and its bottom surface contacts the bottom of the shaft's keyway. When torque (rotational force) is applied to the shaft, the key transmits that force to the hub by friction and by direct contact on the sides of the keyway.
