A tool file is a hand-operated cutting tool with a series of hardened-steel teeth that remove material through a controlled scraping or cutting action. It is one of the oldest precision tools in human history, and it remains indispensable in modern workshops. While a power grinder or belt sander can remove material quickly, neither offers the same level of control over the final surface, nor are they suitable for the same range of shapes and internal geometries. A file allows a machinist to remove 0.001 inches for a perfect press-fit bearing, or a woodworker to shape a complex curve on a chair leg. This control, combined with a low initial cost and near-zero ongoing power requirements, is why the file remains a cornerstone of precision work.

The Physical Mechanics of Cutting

To understand why one file behaves differently from another, you must understand how the teeth engage the work. A file is essentially a long, tapered piece of high-carbon steel with a series of cutting edges cut or stamped into its face. The physical action is a shear cutting process, not an abrasive rubbing process like sandpaper. Each tooth on the file acts as a miniature cutting tool, with an acute cutting angle that lifts a small chip of the workpiece material. As you push the file forward, the teeth bite into the work, and the chips are pushed up and out of the way.
