Chapter 1: Understanding Toner & Inkjet Cartridge Refills
A toner cartridge and an inkjet cartridge are both consumable reservoirs, but they solve completely different engineering problems. Toner is a dry powder that is melted onto paper; ink is a liquid that is deposited onto paper. The refilling process for each is different, the failure modes are different, and the economic logic is different. If you understand the underlying physics, you can refill either one without damaging the printer and without guessing at quality.
Start with the inkjet side, because the cartridge is frequently the printhead itself. In many popular consumer printers, the printhead is an assembly of microscopic nozzles, and the ink cartridge sits directly on top of it, feeding fluid by capillary action. When you buy an OEM cartridge for a printer like an HP Deskjet or a Canon PIXMA, you are buying a single unit that contains the ink, the nozzles, and the electrical contacts that the printer uses to fire each nozzle. When that cartridge runs out of ink, you replace the whole assembly, including the expensive nozzles you did not wear out. Refilling that kind of cartridge means filling the same reservoir and hoping the nozzles are still viable.
