A toilet is a machine. At its most basic level, a toilet is a sanitation fixture that uses water to transport human waste from a bowl through a hidden trap and into the building's drain system. But that simple definition obscures what actually makes a toilet work, and why the differences between one toilet and another matter more than most people realize.
How a Toilet Works: The Basic Cycle
Every toilet follows the same fundamental sequence, repeated hundreds of times per year in a typical household:
1. The user flushes. This action either lifts a flapper valve or triggers a pressure-release mechanism, allowing water to leave the tank and enter the bowl. How fast and how much water leaves the tank determines whether the flush will be strong enough to move waste through the trap and into the drainage line.
2. Water enters the bowl and creates flow. As water fills the bowl from the rim (via holes around the bowl's perimeter) and the siphon jet (a small opening near the trap opening), it creates a current. The bowl's shape—sloped toward the trap—directs this water toward a narrow passage called the trap.
