What Thread and Floss Actually Are
Thread and floss are engineered fibers twisted or plied together into a linear form suitable for stitching, embroidering, weaving, or decorative applications. They are not natural products pulled from a plant or animal—they are manufactured materials, often refined multiple times, combined with other fibers, and processed under controlled conditions to achieve specific properties. Understanding what thread actually is requires looking at three inseparable components: the raw fibers themselves, how those fibers are assembled, and how the finished product behaves under the real-world conditions you'll subject it to.
The fibers in thread start as either natural materials (cotton harvested from bolls, silk from cocoons, wool from sheep) or synthetic polymers (polyester and nylon synthesized from petroleum or biomass). Each fiber type has inherent properties—cotton is absorbent and breathes well but lacks elasticity; polyester is strong and resists moisture but can melt under heat; silk is lustrous and drapes beautifully but degrades under UV light and alkaline conditions. When a manufacturer buys cotton fibers, they are short, discontinuous strands. When they buy polyester, it often arrives as continuous filament—essentially a single unbroken strand. These base materials do not magically become thread. They are carded (combed into parallel lines), spun (twisted to create a cohesive yarn), sometimes bleached or dyed, and then further processed. The path from raw fiber to finished thread involves choices at every step, and those choices determine how the thread will perform in your needle, on your
