A telescope is an optical instrument designed to collect light from distant objects and concentrate it so that you can observe fine detail. Its essential job is straightforward: gather photons and resolve them clearly enough to show you something you cannot see with your unaided eye. But the physics that makes telescopes work, and the limits built into that physics, determine everything about how useful a particular telescope will be for a particular purpose.

At its core, a telescope does three things: it collects light through a large optical surface (the primary mirror or objective lens), it converges that light toward a focal point, and it presents that concentrated light to your eye, a camera, or a spectrograph through an eyepiece or detector. The larger the light-collecting surface, the more photons you catch, and the fainter the objects you can detect. That fundamental advantage—more aperture, more light—is why professional observatories spend hundreds of millions of dollars on massive mirrors, and why a 14-inch reflector reveals more detail on the Moon than a 4-inch one.

Understanding three core optical properties will anchor every decision you make about which telescope to buy or use:

  • Light-gathering power. This depends on aperture—the diameter of the primary mirror or objective lens. A 10-inch telescope collects four times more light than a 5-inch telescope because light-gathering increases with the square of the diameter.
