Open up any professional-grade bottle of tattoo ink and you are holding a carefully engineered suspension. It is not simply colored water. A tattoo ink is a formulation of solid pigment particles dispersed in a liquid carrier, with a set of additives to control everything from viscosity to shelf life. Understanding this physical reality is the foundation of all good tattoo work. The artist who treats ink as a mysterious substance to be poured and prayed over is at the mercy of their materials. The artist who understands the chemistry and physics at play is an engineer of permanence.
Let us break down that definition. The solid part of the ink is the pigment. This is the substance that gives the color its identity and its permanence. Pigments are not dyes. A dye dissolves into a solvent and colors it at a molecular level. A pigment, however, is a fine, insoluble powder. It does not dissolve; it remains as discrete solid particles that are trapped in the dermis when the tattoo heals. This distinction is critical: because pigment particles are insoluble and often large enough to be trapped by the body's immune response, they remain in place for decades. Dyes, by contrast, would be quickly metabolized and cleared by the body, fading into nothing within months.
Pigments used in tattooing fall into a few broad categories. Inorganic pigments are typically metal oxides and salts. Carbon black, which gives black ink its color, is essentially a
