A tampon is a cylindrical mass of compressed natural or synthetic fibers, typically 1.5 to 2 inches in length and roughly 0.5 to 0.75 inches in diameter, designed to be inserted into the vaginal canal to absorb menstrual fluid. It is a medical consumable product—used once and discarded—with a defined lifecycle of insertion, wear, and removal. Understanding how a tampon works, what it is made of, and why it matters begins with three concrete facts: the anatomy it interfaces with, the mechanism of absorption, and the standards that govern its safety and performance.

Physiologically, a tampon functions by expanding into the vaginal canal as it absorbs fluid and creates a seal against the vaginal walls. The vagina is a potential space—normally collapsed—that expands when volume is introduced. A tampon, when inserted correctly, packs against the walls of the vagina, creating contact across a broad surface area. This contact, combined with the absorbent material's capillary action and chemical affinity for fluid, draws menstrual blood into the tampon and holds it there. A menstruating person typically sheds between 30 and 40 milliliters of blood over a menstrual period, though this varies significantly based on individual physiology, hormonal factors, and underlying conditions. A single tampon sized for moderate absorbency can hold approximately 5 milliliters of fluid when fully saturated; a super-absorbency tampon can hold 12 to 15 milliliters. Understanding this ratio is essential: wear time and absorbency capacity must align with the user's actual flow to prevent both leakage
