When you sprinkle a fine dusting of powder on a shuffleboard table, you are not simply adding a lubricant. You are applying millions of tiny, resilient silicone microspheres. These are not ground-up minerals; they are manufactured beads, most often made from a food-grade silicone polymer that is cured and processed into a specific size distribution. These beads act as a layer of microscopic ball bearings between the puck (or 'weight') and the wooden surface. They do not melt or become a liquid film; instead, they roll and deform slightly under the pressure of the puck, separating the hard surfaces and dramatically reducing sliding friction.
The choice of silicone as the base material is not arbitrary. Silicone's key property is its low coefficient of friction against both wood and the phenolic resin used in most modern pucks. It is also hydrophobic, meaning it resists water. This is critical for performance and safety. Standard powders, historically made from paraffin or other waxes, would absorb moisture from the air or from a spilled drink, becoming sticky and slowing the game dramatically. Silicone beads do not absorb water. A bead that gets wet will have a thin film of water on its surface, but the bead itself remains a solid, slippery sphere, and the film can be easily pushed aside by the passing puck.
