A swimsuit is fundamentally a close-fitting garment made from elastic fiber blends, knit into a fabric structure, then cut and sewn to fit the human body in and around water. That simple description conceals enormous variation in materials, construction quality, durability, and real-world performance. A $25 polyester blend suit sold in a discount chain, a $150 competition-grade nylon-elastane suit, and a $300 technical racing suit are all swimwear. They occupy completely different performance and durability tiers, and they fail for different reasons.
Why Material Composition Matters
Swimwear is almost always made from one of three primary fiber types: polyester, nylon, or a small minority of specialized technical fibers. Each has different durability, elasticity, water absorption, and vulnerability to chlorine and UV.
Nylon and elastane blends (typically 80% nylon, 20% elastane or spandex) have been the standard for competitive and serious recreational swimwear for decades.
