Sunscreen is a topical cosmetic or pharmaceutical product designed to reduce the transmission of ultraviolet (UV) radiation through the skin. This simple definition masks a more complex reality: sunscreen is the interface between human skin and the sun's energy, and understanding what happens at that interface—chemically, physically, and biologically—is essential for anyone recommending, selecting, or using it effectively.
The need for sunscreen is rooted in what UV radiation actually does to skin. The sun emits electromagnetic radiation across a spectrum of wavelengths. The portion that reaches Earth's surface includes visible light (which we see), infrared radiation (which we feel as heat), and ultraviolet radiation (which we cannot directly perceive). This UV radiation comes in two main types: UVA (wavelengths of 315-400 nanometers) and UVB (wavelengths of 280-315 nanometers). A small amount of UVC radiation exists, but Earth's ozone layer filters it out before it reaches us.
UVB radiation is the primary driver of acute sun damage. When UVB photons strike DNA in skin cells, they can cause direct damage to the genetic material, leading to mutations. This is why UVB exposure causes sunburn—the redness, heat, and peeling you experience after a day at the beach. Repeated UVB exposure compounds this damage over years and decades, increasing the risk of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, the most common forms of skin cancer.
