Chapter 1: Understanding Sundials
A sundial measures time using the shadow cast by the sun. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow of an object called a gnomon falls across a marked surface (the dial face), and the position of that shadow indicates the hour of the day. Sundials have been in use for at least 3,500 years and remain in active use today—not as primary timekeeping devices, but as functional outdoor instruments that provide time without power, electronics, or maintenance beyond occasional cleaning.
Despite their age, sundials are widely misunderstood. Many people assume a sundial is primarily ornamental, or that any sundial can be placed anywhere and will work equally well. In reality, a sundial is a geometric instrument whose accuracy and utility depend on precise installation, understanding its limitations, and matching its design to the location and use case. A properly installed horizontal sundial can show time to within a minute or two on any clear day. A poorly installed one might be off by 20 minutes or more, making it functionally useless. The difference is not quality of manufacture—it is installation.
The fundamental principle is simple: the gnomon (the object casting the shadow) must be tilted at an angle equal to your geographic latitude, and it must point toward true north. When these conditions are met, the shadow moves in a predictable way that corresponds to the actual sun's position in the sky.
