What A Streaming Player Actually Is
A streaming and home media player is a dedicated computing device whose primary job is to accept compressed digital media files over a network, decode them, and output them to a display and an audio system. That sounds simple, but the practical reality is more involved. The device is, at its core, a small computer running an operating system, with a system-on-chip (SoC) that includes a CPU, a GPU, a video decoder block, and an audio processor. It also contains network interfaces, storage, and a set of output ports. The most common configurations are a small set-top box sitting next to a television, an HDMI dongle that plugs directly into the display, or a media player embedded into a smart TV or a soundbar. For the purposes of this book, the focus is on a unit that is not part of a display or speaker—a dedicated player that you chose and purchased as a separate device.
To understand why this separation matters, consider a typical scenario. You have a large library of local media files on a network-attached storage (NAS) device, and you want to play a 4K HDR movie, encoded in HEVC (H.265), with lossless 7.1 audio, on a projector. Your display and your AVR are capable of handling that content. But the built-in player on your TV, if it has one, might not be able to decode that specific codec or support the audio
