Chapter 1: Understanding Stopwatches

A stopwatch is a timepiece designed to measure the duration of an event from a start signal to a stop signal. Unlike a clock, which tells you the current time of day, a stopwatch measures an interval. This distinction is the foundation of everything else in this book. While the concept is simple, the engineering and practical application of stopwatches vary widely, and a serious user needs to understand these differences to avoid costly errors.

At its core, a stopwatch must perform three functions: start, stop, and reset. The start function begins the timing sequence. The stop function ends the timing sequence and displays the elapsed time. The reset function returns the display to zero, preparing the instrument for the next event. In more advanced instruments, a split and a lap function allow the user to record intermediate times without stopping the overall timing. The difference between "split" and "lap" is critical and often misunderstood. A split time shows the cumulative elapsed time at any given moment (e.g., the time at the 200m mark in a 400m race, which includes the first lap). A lap time shows the time for just the most recent segment (e.g., the time for the second 200m alone). A professional must know which function they need for their specific sport or process before purchasing a device.
