Chapter 1: Understanding Staples

A staple is a U-shaped wire fastener, typically made from mild steel, stainless steel, or specialty alloys, used to bind sheets of paper or light materials together. At its core, a staple works through simple mechanical compression: the two legs of the staple pierce through paper, and when they exit the back, they are bent inward and flattened—a process called clinching—to lock the sheets together. This basic mechanism has remained fundamentally unchanged for more than a century, yet the performance and reliability of staples in real-world applications depend on a series of engineered specifications that most users never consider.

The simplicity of a staple's appearance masks significant engineering.
