What a Stapler Is and Why It Matters

A stapler is a mechanical fastening device designed to drive a metal staple through multiple layers of paper, cardboard, or similar material, bending the staple in the process to create a permanent join. It sounds simple because the basic mechanism is simple: applied force, a guide path, an anvil, and a shaped wire staple. But the engineering that makes a stapler reliable—or unreliable—lies in how precisely those components interact, and that precision becomes obvious only when something goes wrong.

In a typical desktop stapler, you load a strip of staples into a magazine beneath the head. When you press the handle or treadle down, a driver mechanism (often a rotating cam or striking lever) forces a single staple out of the magazine, through a guide, and into the anvil. The anvil is a precisely shaped piece of metal with two legs that bend the staple's legs outward and downward as it hits them, creating a permanent mechanical lock. The handle then rebounds, the driver resets, and the next staple advances into position. The entire sequence takes less than a second.

That simplicity masks a surprising number of failure modes. A stapler can jam if a staple misfeeds and gets stuck perpendicular to the magazine track. It can misfire—pushing a staple only partway through, leaving it bent but not set. It can skip, advancing the magazine without driving a staple. It can bend staples because the driver is too
