Chapter 1: Understanding Stains

Stain is fundamentally a colorant, not a protective coating. This distinction is critical and often misunderstood on job sites. A stain deposits pigment or dye into or onto wood to change its color, but it does not waterproof the surface, block ultraviolet light, or form a durable surface layer the way a varnish, polyurethane, or lacquer does. A stained surface exposed to weather or water without a protective topcoat will fail—the wood will gray, checking will develop, and color will fade. To create a durable finished surface, stain must always be followed by a sealer or topcoat that actually protects the wood. This is a simple fact, but it shapes every decision about stain selection, application timing, and project specification.

Stain works by depositing color into the wood substrate via a carrier liquid. That carrier—whether water, mineral spirits, oil, or a hybrid solvent—penetrates the wood surface and moves through the cell structure, carrying pigment or dye into the grain. As the carrier evaporates, the pigment or dye is left behind, bonded to the wood through absorption and mechanical adhesion. The depth and evenness of that color depend on how much pigment or dye the carrier is dissolved or suspended in, how deeply the carrier penetrates the wood, and how the wood's surface structure and grain orientation redirect and slow that penetration. Understanding these variables is the foundation for choosing the right stain and executing it consistently.
